Commercial Pilot License

If you have dreams about becoming a professional pilot you have a lot of training ahead of you. All pilots start out by obtaining their private pilot’s license before they can move on to professional training. In many ways this is a good thing. If you dream about being a professional pilot, but have never flown before, obtaining your private license will give you the chance to see what flying is all about, and make a more informed decision about whether you want to fly for a living, or keep it as a hobby. If you decide to take that next step there are plenty of schools that can help you get your commercial pilot’s license.

For starters, find a good flight school from which to get your private pilot’s license. Make sure they have a good reputation and the kind of program you want. You will need to get your private pilot’s license, so make sure you are in the correct training program. Some schools offer sport pilot license training which too limited for someone who wants to get a commercial license. You might look into schools that also offer commercial pilot training so you can dovetail your private lessons right into your commercial training.

To obtain your commercial pilot’s license you will need to pass a knowledge test and a practical test. You will also need to log a certain number of flight hours in various conditions.  The minimum hours you need are 250. Generally, if you are enrolling in a commercial pilot program from the same school where you obtained your private license you will obtain a commercial license in a propeller driven plane. For many, this is good enough. However if you want to fly for a commercial airline you will have to pursue training in other airplane types, and get a multi-engine rating. Often commercial airlines will offer further training in their own schools for those wishing to learn how to fly jets and so on.

Not only do you need extensive training to get your commercial license, you also need to have a medical certificate. This shows that you are in good health and able to pilot an aircraft. You will be required to have a physical once a year to prove that you are capable to completing you flight duties.
